Unlike the collapse of late Bronze age societies, the climate crisis we face in the 21st century originates from human activity. Hundreds of millions of people are likely to become climate migrants, forced from their homelands by famines, droughts, and other ecological catastrophes. How can we make sense of the disaster of climate change? And what can we do to mitigate its worst effects? Is there hope if we act now?

In a special live event held in partnership with The Conduit, we welcomed Sir David King, the former Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK Government and the Chairman of the Centre for Climate Repair at the University of Cambridge; Sian Sutherland, the co-founder of A Plastic Planet, a global campaign aimed at reducing plastic pollution; and Ari Helgason, a climate technology investor who is passionate about finding and funding innovative solutions to the climate crisis. Their host was Pictet’s Christoph Courth. They discuss how climate change impacts ecosystems and the species that rely on them and explore some of the innovative and ground-breaking solutions that are being developed to mitigate the effects of climate change and restore damaged ecosystems.

Sir David King

Sir David King is the founder and Chair of the Centre for Climate Repair at Cambridge University. Alongside being a professor, a knight of the realm, an Officier dans l’ordre national de la Légion d’honneur and a Royal Fellow, he is also the Chair of the Climate Crisis Advisory Group; Senior Strategy Adviser to the President of Rwanda, founder member of the Clean Growth Leadership Network and previously held the role of the UK governments Chief Scientific Advisor where he played an absolutely pivotal role in raising the profile of the need for governments to act on climate change.

Sian Sutherland

Sian is a serial entrepreneur and self-confessed plastic sinner, with a varied and multiple award-winning background spanning advertising, Michelin Star restaurants, film production and brand creation design agencies. Sian had an epiphany in 2016, working on the film A Plastic Ocean when she learned of the scale and impact of the plastics crisis. She went on to co-founder and lead A Plastic Planet, a pro-activist, pro-solutions, pro-industry global movement with a single goal - to ignite and inspire the world to turn off the plastic tap. Recently at the WEF they launched - PlasticFree.com the world’s first materials and systems solutions platform to help 160m global creatives design waste out at source.

Ari Helgarson

Ari is a climate focused venture investor, philanthropist and serial entrepreneur. Ari founded Uphance.com, before becoming an investor with Index Ventures and Dawn Capital. He serves on the board of Kría, the Icelandic government's fund of funds for venture. Most recently Ari has embarked on a new journey as a climate tech investor as founder of Transition together with his brother David backing transformative ideas that are addressing the impending ecological crisis.

Christoph Courth

Christoph is the Global Head of Philanthropy Services at Pictet. Christoph has been a philanthropic advisor to wealthy families for the past 8 years, in Zurich, Los Angeles and now out of Geneva. Prior to becoming a philanthropy advisor, Christoph spent a decade working in the non-profit sector in East Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean and the UK for organizations such as UNICEF and The Prince’s Charities. He is a regular writer, speaker and contributor on the topic of strategic philanthropy and is the lead author of the Philanthropy Impact Paper series for Pictet.
