George Bennett: Learning the odds

The threads that run through our lives are often woven in childhood. George Bennett, Client Relationship Officer at Pictet Asset Services, first encountered racing on visits to his grandparents in South Africa at four years old. They owned racehorses in Pietermaritzburg, and George would spend his days watching the blur of horses, learning to pick out the family’s blue and gold ‘silks’ - the distinctive jackets and caps worn by a horse’s rider so that it can be recognised at speed.

Eggs, durum wheat semolina and vegetable carbon – these are some of the (very few) ingredients you will find in Maria R. Martella’s studio, on the second floor of the bank. Standing at her worktop, Maria is busy creating. Shapes rapidly appear beneath her fingers, as if by magic. “These ones are orecchiette and these are casarecce. But I can also make cavatelli, if you know what I mean,” she says, before continuing with her craft, the pasta shapes piling up on a tray.
