Sustainability at Pictet

Our approach to sustainability

We believe that standing behind a scientific, evidence-based approach is essential to long-term investment decision-making. The latest science clearly supports the imperative to shift to a more sustainable economic model. Today, staying investment led means leaning into our sustainability strategy and the convictions that underlie it.

Sustainability at Pictet

For Pictet, the transition to a more resilient and sustainable economy is a strategic priority. It represents both an urgent challenge and an investment opportunity. As a responsible investor, our role is to generate returns on investments for our clients by allocating capital in a way that stimulates innovation and supports the transition.

Our conviction is that sustainability is a driver of long-term value creation.

Group Sustainability Report

The Pictet Group’s second sustainability report refers to the 2024 calendar year and articulates the progress we made against our sustainability strategy.

Strategy and commitments

As an investment firm, the vast majority of our environmental impact is attributable to the investments in our portfolios.

We recognise our role in supporting and enabling the underlying corporate and sovereign issuers to align their activities and policies with the sustainable transition. We believe this will help reduce systemic and portfolio risks and create long-term value for our clients and their investments.

Our sustainability strategy is grounded in three pillars of action

  1. Investing in companies that provide sustainable solutions.
  2. Directing capital towards investments with credible transition plans.
  3. Engaging with issuers, our clients and local communities to drive change.

Our Climate Action Plan

Over 99% of Pictet’s greenhouse gas emissions footprint comes from the investments we manage on behalf of our clients. To address these, we have set externally-verified science-based targets for our managed investments, in line with limiting global warming to 1.5°C by the end of the century.

These external targets are complemented by internal targets covering our operations. We have committed to reducing our absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 55% by 2030 from 2019 levels. For the residual emissions that cannot be reduced or avoided, we support high-quality climate projects that remove carbon from the atmosphere.

Governance, disclosures and policies

The growing impact of environmental degradation is becoming increasingly significant for our investment portfolios, leading to challenges such as higher insurance premiums, litigation, rising input costs, and losses from extreme weather events.

To address these sustainability risks and opportunities consistently, we have established a unified set of standards for investing in listed corporate equity, debt, and sovereigns across the Group. Since 2020, these standards have also been applied to our responsible investing client offerings, serving as a foundation for the guidelines that govern the management of our own assets, including investments made through our balance sheet.

Philanthropy and advocacy through art

Partnerships and bridge-building are critical to advancing change. We believe that philanthropic capital can catalyse solutions to some of the most persistent global challenges.

At Pictet, we not only embrace this conviction through our own philanthropic initiatives, but also in how we advise and support our clients in their impact journeys. The cornerstone of our approach is the Pictet Group Foundation, which actively collaborates with our investment and sustainability teams to optimise our efforts, particularly around water and nutrition.
