George Bennett: Learning the odds

The threads that run through our lives are often woven in childhood. George Bennett, Client Relationship Officer at Pictet Asset Services, first encountered racing on visits to his grandparents in South Africa at four years old. They owned racehorses in Pietermaritzburg, and George would spend his days watching the blur of horses, learning to pick out the family’s blue and gold ‘silks’ - the distinctive jackets and caps worn by a horse’s rider so that it can be recognised at speed.

Nadine Jackson – The woman who learned to swim for a triathlon

Nadine Jackson is lying on her back, staring up at the ceiling of a Long Island swimming hall 30 minutes from JFK International, counting the beams. One. Two. Three. Around her, the water churns: arms slicing past her, legs kicking up spray, the muffled percussion of fifty better swimmers powering up and down the lane. She keeps count of the beams, her arms moving in their wide, steady arcs and tries not to think about how much further there is to go. Four. Five. What on earth is she doing here?
