Phoenix rising

The Great Tohoku Earthquake on 11th March was the largest earthquake to hit Japan since records began. The tsunami that hit the North East coast of Japan was amongst the very worst that Japan has ever suffered. Nearly 30,000 people are missing or confirmed dead. 140,000 people are still homeless.

Destruction and reconstruction 

 

The earthquake and tsunami have caused appalling loss of life and destruction along the coast. Mercifully, the region is comparatively lightly populated. In terms of economic impact, it is also lightly industrialised. The three hardest hit prefectures – Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima – represent only about 4 per cent of GDP. Apart from electricity, the infrastructure damage is fairly minimal and is being repaired at an astonishing speed. (...)
