Jean-Hugues Hoarau, Head of Logistics Infrastructure, Geneva

  • Joined Pictet in 2000 as head of the HVAC/R (Heating-Ventilation-Air Conditioning/Refrigeration & Building Automation Systems) unit
  • Previously worked as an engineer at the engineering firm Rigot & Rieben
  • Holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering, specialising in building energy consumption (from the Ecole d'Ingénieurs de Genève - Geneva College of Engineering)

My job in brief
As head of the Logistics Infrastructure Department I'm responsible for co-ordinating the Bank's infrastructure operations. This means I'm in charge of managing the technical, energy-related and environmental aspects of the buildings at the Bank's head office as well as implementing medium and long-term projects regarding the further development of these buildings.

The operational areas handled by the department's staff are many and varied, including transmitting data between the Group's different offices, videoconferencing, telephony, heating in the buildings, electricity supply, ventilation, cleaning, etc. These activities obviously call for specialised engineering and technical expertise, and the synergy of the different skills of our staff means that we are well placed to meet the Bank's quality and efficiency requirements. Indeed, the fact that our users hardly know we're here is the best indication that we're doing our job efficiently and unobtrusively.

And what we do also fits in very much with the Bank's efforts to cuts costs, streamline its operations and manage its environmental impact. I personally am very involved in co-ordinating the innovative "sustainable development" programme which the Bank has decided to introduce. My team and I are, as it were, the technical point of entry for implementing in-house projects aimed at cutting the Bank's CO2 emissions, its energy consumption and the amount of waste it produces, etc. Our remit is therefore to use the technical and financial means available to us to achieve the lofty targets that we have set ourselves.

Even though most of our staff are specialists, in the field of logistics you have to be able to work together as a team and share your knowledge and skills. In addition to this need for good communication within the team, there is a growing need for our staff to raise awareness within the Bank of what they do and their close collaboration with other departments in the Bank, especially and IT and Security. Through these efforts to make what we do more accessible, not only are we able to highlight our achievements, but we can also increase our visibility and influence people's behaviour.
