Prix Pictet: Images to communicate crucial messages

The world's photography award for environmental sustainability

Created in 2008, under the impetus of Pictet and in collaboration with the Financial Times, the Prix Pictet is the world's first prize dedicated to photography and sustainability.

The power of photography

The Prix Pictet has a unique mandate - to use the power of photography to communicate crucial messages to a global audience; and it has a unique goal - art of the highest order, applied to the immense social and environmental threats of the new millennium.

Kofi Annan, Honorary PresidentIn the words of Kofi Annan, the Prix Pictet's Honorary President, "It is my hope that the Prix Pictet will help to deepen understanding of the changes taking place in our world and raise public awareness about the urgency of taking preventative action. The images submitted for the Prix Pictet confront us with the scale of the threat we face and they act to inspire governments, businesses – and all of us as individuals – to step up to the challenge and support change for a sustainable world."

Global audience of 400 million people

In the two years since it was established, the Prix Pictet has become one of the world's most important champions of photography and sustainability.

The first two cycles of the Prix Pictet have surpassed expectations and the prize now plays to a global audience of over 400 million – there is not an artist on the planet who feels too grand to enter.

The Prix Pictet Books

As well as the Prix Pictet exhibitions, for each edition of the Prix Pictet a book based on the theme of the prize is published and distributed worldwide by the Prix Pictet publishing partner TeNeues.

In shortlisting a limited number of photographs for each prize, inevitably some outstanding images are excluded. The book seeks to redress the balance by offering a more wide-ranging insight than is possible in the shortlisting process. Each book presents photographs by nominated artists alongside images by shortlisted photographers, and is accompanied by texts from photography and sustainability experts.

More about the book "Growth"

2009 - "Earth"

The book "Earth" is a review of the Prix Pictet 2009 that showcases the work of the 12 artists shortlisted for this year's award alongside photographs by nominated photographers that best respond to the theme of Earth. The skill, imagination and mastery of form that each of the artists featured in this book bring to their work is unquestionable. What is less obvious is the conviction and, in many cases, the bravery with which they document the damaging and often irreversible effects of exploiting the Earth's resources and the long-term impact of unsustainable development on communities across the globe, and it is this quality too that "Earth" seeks to celebrate. The book is distributed worldwide by teNeues and includes a foreword by Kofi Annan, Honorary President of the Prix Pictet.

2008 - "Water"

The book "Water" reviews the evolution and development of the Prix Pictet 2008, presenting text and images to communicate the Prize's global message on the issue of sustainability. The book showcases the 18 shortlisted artists alongside selected photographs by nominated photographers that best represent the vision of the prize and the theme of Water. There is a foreword by Kofi Annan, Prix Pictet's Honorary President, and essays by Francis Hodgson and Leo Johnson, explaining the inspiration and ambition of the Prix.
